31st January 2021
The year is only young, but already the euphoria of a new one is beginning to wear thin, but hold on take a second look.
ONE: Trump is no longer in office, and with Bidden replacing him there is scope for optimism. He has already torn back the shutters of the Terrible Trump travesty, and has begun reaching out again to the world , in a bid to repair the damage done by the previous regime.
TWO: Brexit, although still in the News does seem to be closer than it was last year. In the words of the learned Professor Stephen Hawkin, 'All we need to do is to keep talking' (Pink Floyd, Division Bell), I think we will achieve near enough what we want from the protracted process of leaving, but as with all things involving the EU, it will take time.
THREE: Covid, with now 4 or 5 tested and approved vaccines being rolled out around the world, we are one step closer to harnessing this pandemic. We, as a country, have had so many deaths as a percentage of our population, but one thing that nobody talks about is how our population is mostly crowded in to very tightly packed geographical areas. In Europe, the populations of France and Germany, Belgium etc are very differently spaced out, and I am sure this is one of the main problems.
The vaccines are beginning to take effect, albeit at a slow pace, however, everyday this is picking up pace. The vaccines are so effective, that the rest of the world is clamouring to get their hands on them, and we have nearly four times the amount we need to be able to vaccinate our whole population.
So, if you think that the beginning of this year is too similar to the end of last year, just stop and really look at the state of our country today. For my part I think I would rather be on our little rock at the Western edge of Europe at this particular time, than anywhere else.
I'm just sayin'
